Day 7/ August 7th – Native Anchorage to Port McNeill

Bear on the beach this morning, followed by a good exploration of the old village. Mostly overgrown now, but still paths throughout and we at least found one old totem laying down in a a state of decay. The area must have been an orchard at one point, because there were huge cherry trees. Salmon berries. Bear scat.

After our tour around Malilikulla we hopped in the boat again and headed up to Alert Bay. Found a spot on the government dock at the South end of town, where I’m pretty sure my wife had strung up bunting flags along the dock to welcome us. Met Kim in the Passing Thyme restaurant. Yummy apple pie and homemade bread.

Walked the length of the town and visited the U’mista Cultural Centre, a cultural museum that thoughtfully illustrates the history of colonisation and the experience of residential school for the Kwakwaka’wakw people.

Motored over to Port McNeil.  Got showers, picked up pizza and cracked a bottle of wine on the foredeck. Jeff leaves by bike early tomorrow morning.
